La Ofrenda

In 1982 AGD Mendoza was commissioned to design and build (what would become his lasting legacy) ‘El Jardin del Tepeyac’ (Tepeyac Garden) and the ‘La Ofrenda’ (The Offering) monument showing the ‘Virgin of Guadalupe’ receiving gifts from the native people of Mexico.

Built on the sacred grounds of ‘La Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe’ La Ofrenda took almost four years to complete and is seen by millions of religious pilgrims and tourists each year.  Please watch our video as we take you on the journey of the making of La Ofrenda.

The site of the Basilica marks the spot where the Virgin de Guadalupe, Mexico's most revered saint, appeared to indigenous farmer Juan Diego in 1531.  Every year, millions of pilgrims make their way to the shrine. The largest amount of pilgrims visit around December 12, ‘El Dia de la Virgin’ (the day of the Virgin).

A study carried out by the *'Spanish Office of Tourism' found that Mexico's capital is the preferred destination of tourists seeking religious sites, largely because of its Basilica de Guadalupe, which receives millions of pilgrims each year.

Estimates for annual visitation to 'La Basilica' run as high as 20 million. According to a 1999 Vatican Council report, it was the most-visited Roman Catholic shrine in the world.  That also made 'La Ofrenda' one of the most visited Roman Catholic monuments in the world.

*Mexico City finished first in a list of the world's most visited religious tourism destinations, ahead of the Vatican and Lourdes in France.
