Watercolors

Mendoza's early works consisted mainly of watercolors.

Most of these paintings are theatre scene backdrops for plays and opera, in his early years Mendoza was a scenographer, better known today as a 'set designer'.  Before painting the massive 20' x 80' backdrops Mendoza always painted a detailed watercolor for the storyboard first.  What we have in this section are the surviving original storyboard watercolors.  Often the director or producer would keep all or parts of the original storyboards.

Most of the watercolors are from Mendoza's own penned play "Yayax Can" (see the narrative on each watercolor).

With Mendoza's reputation growing as a creative artist and designer he began to produce 'commercial art'.  He created advertising for some of the largest Mexican national and international companies and brands. Surviving examples of Mendoza's original advertising watercolors are also in this section.  Mendoza also designed and created fabulous award winning 'Parade Floats'.  His parade float watercolors are vintage images of a bygone era.

These watercolors are some of the best small watercolor examples ever produced. They show masterful attention to detail and the use of bright capturing colors make them command your attention.

The commercial art beautifully captures the era and moment in time.  Most of these works are signed with Mendoza's earliest known signature.
